October, 2002

October 22, 2002 - Santa Cruz Roos just falls short at the Nationals
Comments 3

Santa Cruz Roos, the representative team of the GGAFL, headed off to the US Footy national championship in Kansas, over the weekend of October 17, and made it through to the championship game, going down to a very talented Orange County side.

October 20, 2002 - Titlequest - we aren't in Kansas anymore.
Comments 2

Rabbitville? Possum Trot? Keeping its original name would have been the only way Kansas City would have felt more like home to the Roos from Santa Cruz. Twenty nine players, selected from all 4 teams in the Golden Gate Australian Football League, and five Support Staff traveled west to Missouri to contest the Coopers USFooty 2002 National Tournament.

September, 2002

September 21, 2002 - Hornets in a close one GGAFL 2002 Grand Final
Comments 3

The difference between winning and losing a Grand Final can be attributed to two things; desire and self-belief. Any team good enough to get to the final is good enough to win, but individually and collectively they have to believe that they can win, and have sufficient desire to win. A little luck never goes astray either.

September 7, 2002 - Movement at the Maverick Station as Bold Statement Made.
Comments 2

And the statement made was a loud and clear "Look Out!" to anyone looking to come between themselves and grand final glory on October 5.

The GGAFL could not have asked for a better day to christen the brand new Central Equity Stadium in Santa Cruz.

August, 2002

August 17, 2002 - Hornets stung into action.
Comments 2

A week's a long time in football, and Oakland were made painfully aware of this by a rejuvenated San Jose on the weekend.

Fresh from their fighting victory over Marin the week before, Oakland fancied their chances against the Hornets.

August 10, 2002 - Mavericks come a'cropper.
Comments 1

Under a blazing sun an undermanned and lightly fancied Oakland team made a mockery of ladder standings by running over the top of the highly rated Marin Mavericks.

Marin have been ladder leaders all season and were undefeated prior to this week. They have been heavy scorers all year, with the other teams struggling to penetrate their defense.

July, 2002

July 27, 2002 - Knights sink Pirates.
Comments 4

This week the GGAFL played its match of the round at Cooper Park in Mountain View. This hallowed ground had seen numerous ANZAC Cup battles and Sunday's match proved the equal of any game played there previously.

July 21, 2002 - When the Saints come marching in..
Comments 3

It was All Saints Day in Palo Alto on the weekend, when the San Jose Hornets played host to the San Francisco Knights. For those spectators who braved the early morning start, they were treated to an entertaining duel between two evenly matched sides.

June, 2002

June 29, 2002 - Eade quits; Locket resigns; Anthony sacked; Knights win.
Comments 3

In a tumultuous week of football, San Francisco and Sydney showed they had more in common than just distinctive bridges. Both clubs looked to the future, couldn't see a role for their current coaches, so removed them.

June 29, 2002 - No Bryn, No WIn?
Comments 4

OAKLAND - This is the question the Oakland Pirates will be asking themselves after going into last Saturday's Game as firm favorites to come home with the win.

June 15, 2002 - A day good for Football
Comments 2

Warm sunshine, the smell of eucalyptus, the sound of flesh slapping against flesh, and grown men chasing a pigskin about a park. Visitors to Palo Alto are yet to regard this as normal - in other parts of the country it'd be commonplace. Everyone has a role to play now in bringing football to the Bay Area.

June 8, 2002 - From the Pirate's Chest
Comments 2

The Golden Gate Australian Rules Football League opened its inaugural season with a blinding match played between traditional rivals San Francisco and Marin last Saturday.

In near perfect conditions players and spectators from as far afield as Fresno and Pope Valley assembled in Mountain View to participate in something far more than a football match.

April, 2002

April 14, 2002 - A GREAT DAY HAD BY ALL
Comments 4

With apologies to Julie Andrews, "The fields were alive to the sound of music". The sounds, that is, of boot hitting leather for the first time this year, at Greer Park on Sunday.
